Crashed Stolen Vehicle Leads to Arrest of Juvenile

Just before 8:00 am on November 4, 2024, we received a report of several vehicles driving recklessly on Rt. 34 coming from Derby. Moments later, a gray Kia Sportage was involved in a serious crash near the intersection with Mapledale Road when it hit two other cars before hitting a tree. Witnesses reported seeing the driver running from the Kia into the woods away from the crash. An Audi involved in the initial reckless driving complaint then made a U-turn on Rt 34 and headed back toward Derby.  That Audi and the crashed Kia were stolen from Waterbury overnight. The man seen running was soon arrested, identified as a 17-year-old from New Haven, and transported to the hospital for evaluation after the crash.
